What's With The Ducks?

You are walking around the ship minding your own business and all of a sudden out of the corner of your eye you see a what looks like a little yellow rubber duck. You take a closer look and it is. Plus there is a tag attached. It says "Oh what luck you found a duck"

Why is someone hiding little ducks around the ship? Well is seems that it started some years ago by a little girl who wanted to make others happy on the cruise. Now these little ducks are hiding on practically every ship of every cruise line.

If you find a duck you do not need to pick it up, you can leave it for someone else to find. But if you do find one usually there is a tag attached informing you who hid the duck and where they are from. From there you can keep the duck and start a collection if you are lucky enough to find more or you can hide it again for someone else to find.

No matter what these little cruising ducks have brought joy to thousands of people and there are even social media pages where people get together to talk about where to purchase ducks, tags and the best places for hiding. People also post the ducks they find hoping that the person or family that hid them might see who the lucky recipient is.

One of the largest Facebook groups for the ducks is Cruising Ducks - Original group. It has over 219,000 members all enjoying this fun little game of duck hide and seek.

There are very few rules about hiding ducks but there a some. Do not put them in hot tubs or pools. You don't want a small child going in to retrieve it. Do not hide them in in onboard shops and don't place them where they might go overboard and into the ocean. Keep the oceans clean.

Yes we collect and hid ducks ourselves. We love trying to find them and see how many we can collect and we take them home and hide them on our next cruise. Some of our ducks have traveled from one side of the country to the other.

Ducks are not always the standard yellow or size. Some are mini, some are huge. Some are green or blue, some look like other animals or even space aliens. Some are holiday themed to match the time of year. Some people go as far as to make their own ducks.

Duck hiding has also become fun for some crew members as they collect them and decorate their cabin with them or bring them home to their families.

Although not everyone is a fan of the ducks but the good news is that you do not need to do anything. Just keep on walking and let someone else pick it up. But it has brought joy to young and old. Families make it a game with children hiding the ducks and sitting near by hoping to see who found it. So if you find one think about picking it up taking a selfie or yourself with the duck and post it so those who hid it can see who rescued their duck and know if it's going home or was put back into hiding for someone else to find.
