Cruises are meant to be relaxing sunshine, ocean views, great food, and stress-free days at sea. What most cruisers don’t plan for, though, is a trip to the ship’s medical center. And trust us: you don’t want your vacation budget disappearing because of a Band-Aid or a few pills.
The onboard medical facility is convenient and staffed with qualified professionals, but it’s also not covered by most health insurance plans and can be shockingly expensive. Something as simple as a minor illness or small injury can turn into a bill of several hundred dollars or more.
That’s why being prepared with a small cruise first aid kit is one of the smartest things you can do before boarding. Cruise ship medical centers operate more like private urgent care clinics at sea. Prices vary by cruise line, but it’s common to see $150–$200 just to be seen. Plus with additional charges for medications, extra fees for basic supplies and it's all billed directly to your onboard account.
Even over-the-counter medications you’d normally buy for a few dollars at home can be marked up significantly onboard or may not be available at all when you need them. Having basic first aid and medications with you can save money, time, and stress, especially late at night or while docked in port.
You don’t need to pack a full medicine cabinet just the essentials that cover common cruise ailments.
Basic First Aid Supplies - These are lifesavers for minor cuts, blisters, and scrapes:
- Adhesive bandages (various sizes)
- Blister pads (especially if you plan to walk a lot in port)
- Antiseptic wipes or spray
- Gauze pads and medical tape
- Small tube of antibiotic ointment
- Tweezers (great for splinters or stubborn sand)
Pain & Fever Relief - Between sun exposure, excursions, and late nights, headaches and aches happen:
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
- Ibuprofen or naproxen (Advil/Aleve)
- Muscle rub or pain relief cream - Tip: Bring more than you think you’ll need sharing with a travel companion can quickly drain your supply.
Stomach & Digestive Medications - Cruise food is amazing… but rich foods, alcohol, and unfamiliar cuisines can upset even strong stomachs.
- Antacids (Tums, Rolaids)
- Anti-diarrheal medication (Imodium)
- Motion sickness medication (Dramamine, Bonine)
- Ginger chews or nausea bands - Motion sickness meds are especially important even seasoned cruisers can be surprised by rough seas.
- Cold, Allergy & Sinus Relief - Air-conditioned cabins and crowded venues can trigger symptoms fast:
- Allergy medication (Claritin, Zyrtec, Benadryl)
- Throat lozenges
Skin & Sun Care - Sunburns are one of the most common cruise injuries—and ship medical centers see plenty of them.
- Aloe vera or after-sun gel
- Hydrocortisone cream (for rashes or bug bites)
- Sunscreen (yes, even extra)
- Lip balm with SPF
Always pack medications in your carry-on, not checked luggage.
- All prescription medications (plus a few extra days’ supply) Inhalers, EpiPens, or medical devices
- Copies of prescriptions (helpful in emergencies)
Some cruise ships sell limited medications in gift shops, but availability is inconsistent and prices are often much higher than on land. Plus, shops may be closed when you actually need something like late at night or during port days.
Being prepared Is Better Than Overcharged. No one boards a cruise planning to get sick or injured but it happens. A small, well-thought-out first aid kit can prevent minor issues from becoming expensive vacation disruptions.
Think of it this way: spending $20–$30 at home on basic supplies can save you hundreds onboard and keep your cruise fun, relaxing, and stress-free.
