You've finally made it onboard! After months of planning, counting down the days, and dreaming about your vacation, it can be tempting to head straight to the nearest bar and order that first vacation drink.
But before you fully switch into cruise mode, there are a few things you should take care of first. Getting these items out of the way early will make the rest of your cruise smoother and help you avoid long lines later in the day.
1. Complete the Muster Drill
The muster drill is the first thing you should take care of after boarding.
If you're new to cruising, the muster drill is a mandatory safety procedure designed to familiarize you with your muster station, the location you'll report to in the unlikely event of an emergency.
Many cruise lines now use an e-muster system where you watch a safety video on the cruise line's app or your cabin television and then check in at your assigned muster station. Other cruise lines may still conduct a more traditional drill.
Since every cruise line handles it a little differently, it's best to complete the process as soon as possible so you can enjoy the rest of your day.

2. Make Any Remaining Reservations
If you haven't already booked specialty dining, entertainment, spa treatments, or other onboard experiences, now is the time.
Many reservations can be made through the cruise line's app, but some ships still have dedicated reservation desks open on embarkation day.
Popular restaurants and shows can fill up quickly, so taking care of this early gives you the best chance of getting the times you want. It's also a good opportunity to check for embarkation-day spa specials, which are often discounted.
3. Double-Check Your Onboard Account
Most cruisers now link a credit card during online check-in, but it's still a good idea to verify that everything is set up correctly.
If you're using cash for your onboard spending account, you'll likely need to visit Guest Services to make your deposit.
Guest Services lines tend to get longer as the day goes on, so handling any account issues early can save you valuable vacation time later.
4. Grab Your First Vacation Drink
Now that you've handled some of the important stuff, it's time to officially start your vacation.
Whether it's a frozen cocktail by the pool, a cold beer, a specialty coffee, or your favorite soda, this is often the moment when the cruise finally feels real.
If you're interested in souvenir cups or drink package promotions, embarkation day is often a good time to check for special offers.
5. Explore the Ship
Cruise ships can feel like floating cities, especially if it's your first time onboard a particular vessel.
Take some time to walk around and get your bearings. Find the dining venues, pools, theaters, lounges, fitness center, and any spots that catch your eye.
You might discover a hidden observation deck, a quiet reading area, or a hot tub tucked away from the crowds. Knowing your way around early will make the rest of your cruise much more enjoyable.
6. Have Lunch
By now you're probably getting hungry.
While the buffet is the most popular option on embarkation day, it's often not the only choice. Many ships have complimentary restaurants, poolside grills, pizza counters, delis, or specialty venues that are open for lunch.
A little research before your cruise can help you find these hidden gems and avoid some of the longest buffet lines.
7. Check Out Your Cabin
Cabins are usually ready sometime in the early afternoon.
Once you can access your room, take a few minutes to inspect everything. Make sure the lights work, the television turns on, the safe functions properly, and that any requested items are present.
If something isn't working correctly, let your cabin steward or Guest Services know right away. Problems are usually fixed quickly when reported early.
8. Put Your Phone in Airplane Mode
This simple step could save you from a very expensive surprise when you get home.
Cruise ships use cellular networks at sea that can generate costly roaming charges if your phone automatically connects.
Before the ship sails away, put your phone in Airplane Mode. If you've purchased a Wi-Fi package, you can then turn Wi-Fi back on and connect to the ship's network.
A few seconds of preparation could save you hundreds of dollars.
9. Enjoy Sail Away
One of the best moments of any cruise is sail away.
Many ships celebrate departure with music, dancing, and a lively pool deck party. If that's your style, join the fun and soak in the excitement.
If you prefer something more relaxing, find a quiet deck, grab a drink, and watch the shoreline slowly disappear into the distance.
No matter how you choose to spend it, sail away marks the official beginning of your cruise vacation.
Embarkation day can feel a little hectic, but taking care of a few important tasks early can make the rest of your cruise much more enjoyable.
