Thinking About Taking a Solo Cruise? Here's What You Need to Know

When people think about cruising, they often picture couples or families sailing together. In fact, our name—
Cruising Together Couple—reflects exactly how we enjoy cruising.

But cruising solo has become more popular than ever.

Whether you're single, widowed, divorced, retired, or simply looking for some time to yourself, more travelers are discovering that a cruise can be an excellent solo vacation. Cruise lines have taken notice, and many now offer cabins designed specifically for one guest.

Traditionally, cruise fares are based on double occupancy.
That means if only one person books a standard cabin, they often have to pay a single supplement, which can be close to the cost of paying for two guests. For years, this made solo cruising much more expensive than many travelers expected.

Fortunately, that's been changing. Cruise Lines Are Adding More Solo Cabins to meet the growing demand. Several cruise lines now offer staterooms designed specifically for solo travelers.

These cabins are built for one guest, allowing many solo cruisers to avoid paying the traditional single supplement.

One of the pioneers in this area was Norwegian Cruise Line, which introduced Studio cabins exclusively for solo travelers and has continued expanding solo accommodations across its fleet. Today, Norwegian offers several solo cabin categories, including Interior, Oceanview, and Balcony cabins on many of its newer ships.

But Norwegian isn't alone anymore.

Several cruise lines now feature solo accommodations on select ships, including:

  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Holland America Line
  • Cunard
  • Virgin Voyages
  • Oceania Cruises
  • Atlas Ocean Voyages

Availability varies by ship, so it's always worth checking before booking.

One feature many solo cruisers appreciate is the opportunity to meet fellow travelers.
For example, some Norwegian ships include the Studio Lounge, an exclusive gathering space for guests staying in Studio cabins. It's a comfortable place to enjoy a coffee, snack, or drink while meeting other solo travelers.

Many cruise lines also host solo traveler meetups during the voyage, making it easy to connect with others if you choose.

Of course, participating is completely optional. Many solo cruisers simply enjoy the freedom of traveling on their own while still being surrounded by the activities and entertainment a cruise ship offers.

Even if you don't book a dedicated solo cabin, there are still ways to save.

  • Be flexible with your travel dates. Cruise lines often reduce or waive single supplements on select sailings.
  • Work with a travel advisor. They may know about solo traveler promotions that aren't widely advertised.
  • Watch for reduced single supplements. Sometimes paying 125% or 150% of the regular fare is a great deal compared to paying 200%.
  • Consider repositioning cruises. These longer voyages sometimes offer excellent pricing for solo travelers.
  • Look for themed or hosted solo cruises. Some travel companies organize group cruises specifically for solo travelers who want to meet others.

One question many first-time solo cruisers ask is whether cruising alone is safe. Generally speaking, cruises are considered one of the easier ways to travel solo. Your accommodations, transportation, dining, and entertainment are all in one place, and the ship is staffed around the clock. Like any vacation, it's important to use common sense, stay aware of your surroundings, and exercise caution when exploring ports independently.

Solo cruising isn't for everyone but for many travelers, it's the perfect vacation. You can spend your days exactly how you want, whether that's relaxing by the pool, joining trivia, exploring a new destination, or simply enjoying the peace and quiet of having your own cabin.

While we still prefer cruising together, we love seeing cruise lines create more options for people who want or need to travel on their own.

The growing number of solo cabins is making cruising more affordable and accessible than ever, and that's great news for anyone who's been waiting to book their first solo adventure.
