Can You Wear Water Shoes in a Carnival Ship Pool?

Water shoes have become a popular item to pack for a cruise.

They're great for rocky beaches, water parks, shore excursions, and even walking around slippery pool decks. But one question many cruisers have is:

Can you wear water shoes in the ship's swimming pool?

The answer may surprise you.

Carnival's Position on Water Shoes

The question gained attention after a Carnival guest asked Brand Ambassador John Heald why a lifeguard told her husband he couldn't wear water shoes in the pool after he had previously slipped and been injured. The guest pointed out that she couldn't find any official written rule prohibiting water shoes.

John Heald responded that Carnival's fleetwide practice is that guests should not wear water shoes in the swimming pools.
According to Heald, the concern isn't the shoes themselves it's what they might carry into the water.

Sand, dirt, food particles, broken glass, or other debris trapped in the soles could end up in the pool, creating sanitation or maintenance issues.

At first glance, the rule may seem unnecessary. However, cruise ship pools are carefully maintained, and keeping the water clean is a priority.

Think about where water shoes are often worn:

  • Beaches
  • Public walkways
  • Pool decks
  • Restrooms
  • Shore excursions

It's easy for sand, dirt, grass, or other debris to become trapped in the bottoms of the shoes. We've even found sand in our own water shoes several days after visiting a beach.

Introducing that material into the pool can affect water quality and increase maintenance requirements.

Is the Rule Always Enforced?
Like many onboard policies, enforcement can vary. Some guests report being asked to remove their water shoes before entering the pool, while others say they've seen passengers wearing them without being stopped.

That inconsistency is probably why the topic continues to generate discussion among cruisers. If a crew member asks you to remove your water shoes before entering the pool, it's best to follow their instructions.

What If You Need Extra Stability?

Many cruisers wear water shoes because they feel more secure on wet surfaces.

If balance or mobility is a concern, consider:

  • Wearing water shoes while walking around the pool deck.
  • Using the pool's handrails when entering and exiting the water.
  • Taking your time on wet surfaces.
  • Asking Guest Services if you have questions about accessibility or available accommodations.

Safety should always come first.

While policies vary slightly by cruise line, most ships have similar pool safety guidelines, including:

  • Walk—don't run—on wet decks.
  • Use ladders and handrails when entering and exiting the pool.
  • Parents should supervise children at all times.
  • Children who are not toilet trained should not use the main pools unless permitted by the cruise line.
  • No diving, roughhousing, or horseplay.
  • No glass containers in the pool area.
  • Shower before entering the pool whenever possible.
  • Avoid using the pool if you're feeling ill.

You'll usually find the ship's specific pool rules posted near the pool or in the cruise line's mobile app.

We understand both sides of this discussion. If you've had a previous fall or rely on water shoes for stability, being asked to remove them can be frustrating.

At the same time, cruise lines have to consider the cleanliness and maintenance of pools that are used by thousands of guests every week.

If you plan on wearing water shoes around the ship, they're still an excellent choice for the pool deck, beach days, and many shore excursions. Just be aware that if you're cruising on Carnival or potentially another cruise line you may be asked to remove them before entering the swimming pool.

When in doubt, ask a crew member before getting in the water so there are no surprises.
