MSC Breaks Ground on New Private Island Destination in The Bahamas

MSC Cruises is expanding its private-island presence in The Bahamas with the groundbreaking of Sandy Cay, a new destination being developed next to the cruise line's existing Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

MSC held a groundbreaking ceremony on September 28, marking the official start of the next phase of a project that was first announced earlier this year. Construction and site work are already well underway, with the new destination currently scheduled to open in 2028.

The ceremony brought together MSC Group Cruise Division Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago, Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis, government officials and other people involved with the project.

Sandy Cay is being developed exclusively for guests sailing with MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys. Rather than simply creating another large private-island attraction, MSC says the new destination will have a different feel from its nearby neighbor, focusing more heavily on relaxation, wellness and a more intimate experience.

Sandy Cay will be located immediately adjacent to Ocean Cay, but MSC says the two destinations will have their own identities.

Plans for Sandy Cay currently include beaches, dining venues, relaxation areas, private retreats and curated experiences. The emphasis appears to be on creating a quieter and more upscale destination where guests can spend the day relaxing rather than trying to fit in as many activities as possible.

That could give MSC cruisers an interesting choice when both islands are eventually operating. Ocean Cay has become an important part of MSC's Caribbean itineraries, offering beaches, restaurants, pools, entertainment and other activities. Sandy Cay is being positioned as something different rather than simply an expansion of Ocean Cay.

For passengers who prefer a beach day that revolves around relaxing, spending time in a private retreat or enjoying wellness-focused experiences, Sandy Cay appears to be designed with that type of vacation day in mind.

While MSC is building an entirely new private-island destination next door, the cruise line isn't leaving Ocean Cay behind.

MSC has also announced plans to add new experiences and improvements to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. The upgrades are expected to include additional dining options, new beach concepts aimed at both families and adults, expanded relaxation areas and experiences connected to the island's marine conservation efforts.

That means the future of MSC's private-island experience in The Bahamas won't necessarily be about choosing between the existing Ocean Cay and a replacement destination. Instead, MSC is creating two separate experiences that will operate side by side.

Ocean Cay will continue to offer the more established private-island experience that MSC cruisers already know, while Sandy Cay is being developed with a different atmosphere and purpose.

Having two private destinations located next to each other could give MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys something relatively unusual in the private-island market.

Rather than having to choose between two destinations located hundreds of miles apart, guests will eventually have access to two different island experiences in essentially the same location.

Of course, exactly how different the two islands will feel won't be known until Sandy Cay actually opens. Construction is still underway, and MSC has not yet released all of the details about the restaurants, beaches, activities, pricing or other guest experiences that will be available.

But the overall concept is becoming clearer. Ocean Cay will continue to be a major part of MSC's Caribbean cruise experience, while Sandy Cay will provide another option with an emphasis on wellness, relaxation and a more intimate atmosphere.

With an opening planned for 2028, cruisers still have some time before they can experience Sandy Cay for themselves. In the meantime, the construction of the new island and the upgrades planned for Ocean Cay give MSC passengers something else to watch as the cruise line continues expanding its presence in The Bahamas.

Would you rather spend your private-island day at a place with lots of activities and entertainment, or would you choose the quieter, more relaxing experience MSC is planning for Sandy Cay?
