Norwegian Sky's Final NCL Cruise Canceled Before It Can Even Set Sail
The farewell cruise for Norwegian Sky has been canceled before the ship even gets the chance to say goodbye.
Norwegian Cruise Line has canceled the ship's September 9, 2026, sailing, which was supposed to be the final voyage for the 27-year-old ship under the Norwegian flag. The original 21-day itinerary was scheduled to sail from Athens through the Suez Canal and into Dubai, but concerns about the ongoing situation in the Middle East had already forced Norwegian to make changes to the voyage.
Now, NCL has decided the safest option is to cancel the sailing completely.
Guests affected by the cancellation will receive a full refund of their remaining cruise fare. Norwegian is also offering an additional 50% Future Cruise Credit based on the remaining voyage fare, on top of the 15% credit previously offered when the itinerary was changed.
The cancellation is especially disappointing for longtime fans of Norwegian Sky. The ship entered service in 1999 and has carried an estimated 2.5 million passengers during her career with Norwegian. After the cancellation, her final NCL voyage is now scheduled to be the August 31 sailing from Barcelona to Athens, arriving September 9.
Norwegian Sky is expected to leave the NCL fleet and eventually enter service with India's Cordelia Cruises, potentially under the name Cordelia Sky.
So, after nearly three decades with Norwegian, Sky's farewell is happening, but not quite the way anyone expected.
Cruise Passenger Hit With Nearly $10,000 Medical Bill
A Norwegian Cruise Line passenger recently shared an itemized medical bill on Reddit, and it quickly became one of the most talked-about cruise stories online. The bill totaled nearly $10,000, with more than $8,700 attributed to 21 different tests. Another $600-plus was charged for medications, while supplies added several hundred dollars more.
One charge that caught people's attention was more than $100 for a pulse oximeter reading. Other commenters questioned several of the charges on the bill, including what appeared to be duplicate fees and multiple IV-related charges. Some suggested the passenger ask the cruise line to review the bill.
Regardless of whether every charge is accurate, the story highlights something that many cruisers don't think about until it's too late: medical care on a cruise ship can be expensive.
Cruise ship medical centers are not the same as your doctor's office back home, and your regular health insurance may not cover medical treatment received at sea or in a foreign country the way you expect. More serious situations can become even more expensive if a passenger needs to be transported to a hospital by helicopter or other emergency transportation.
That's why travel insurance is something we believe cruisers should seriously consider. When you're comparing policies, don't just look at the trip cancellation benefits. Pay close attention to emergency medical coverage and, especially, emergency medical evacuation.
You want to leave your cruise with great memories not a $10,000 bill waiting in your mailbox when you get home.

Zac Brown holds Fenway Park’s record for the most consecutive sold-out shows and the most tickets sold in its history and the cruise give away was the way they chose to celebrate the occasion.
It's a pretty great combination: baseball's most famous ballpark, a Zac Brown concert, thousands of fans getting a free cruise.
Norwegian Reveals First Look at New Great Tides Waterpark
Norwegian Cruise Line has given cruisers their first look at the highly anticipated Great Tides Waterpark at Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas, and it looks like Norwegian is taking its private island to a whole new level.
The new waterpark is scheduled to officially open on September 4, 2026, and will feature an impressive 19 waterslides. Among the attractions are the industry's first cliff-jump slides at Cliffside Cove, along with The Great Slide, Splash Cay for younger guests, and the Wandering River, which includes an immersive tunnel.
But this isn't just about waterslides. Norwegian is also adding new places to eat and drink, including Low Tide Smoke for slow-smoked barbecue, Catch of the Cay for seafood, and Tidal Treats for desserts. Guests can grab a drink at Grotto Bar or the Floataway Bar located right in the Wandering River area.
Another major improvement is already complete: Great Stirrup Cay's new two-berth pier is officially open, making it easier for Norwegian's ships to bring even more guests directly to the island.
With the grand opening just weeks away, Great Tides Waterpark could make Great Stirrup Cay a much bigger part of the Norwegian cruise experience.
9-Year-Old Cruise Passenger Finds 60-Year-Old Wedding Ring and Helps Bring It Home
Gordon Sherritt was sailing aboard Holland America Line's Zaandam when he lost his wedding ring, a ring that had been part of his life for 60 years. He returned home without it, unsure if he would ever see it again.
On the next sailing of Zaandam, nine-year-old Corbin Hindriksen of Fort Collins, Colorado, was swimming in the Lido Pool when he spotted something shiny at the bottom. When he dove down to investigate, he discovered a gold ring.
Instead of keeping it, Corbin immediately took the ring to Guest Services. The crew soon realized it was the same ring that had been reported missing during the previous cruise.
Through Holland America's lost-and-found system, the crew was able to identify the owner and arrange for the ring to be returned to Sherritt in British Columbia, Canada. The ring also had an incredible story behind it, it matched the wedding ring worn by his partner, Alice, with whom he has shared 60 years.
Corbin later met Captain Ane Smit and asked if the ring would actually make its way back to its owner. His concern wasn't about the value of the ring, but about making sure it got back to the person who had lost it.
The captain was so impressed with Corbin's honesty that he invited him and his family to the bridge, where he presented the young cruiser with a captain's coin and a model of Zaandam.
For Corbin, it was a pretty special memory from his Alaska cruise. For Gordon Sherritt, it meant getting back something that represented six decades of memories.
As Sherritt put it, "It was wonderful when my wedding ring found its way home."
And we think this is a great reminder that sometimes the smallest acts of honesty can make a very big difference. Nice job Corbin.
