MSC Cruises is getting ready to give Caribbean cruisers another reason to look forward to a day in the Dominican Republic.
The cruise line has revealed more details about Catalina Sugar Beach, a new beach destination on Catalina Island, just off the coast of La Romana. The destination is being developed in partnership with CTL Maritime and Casa de Campo Resort & Villas and is scheduled to open to guests in November 2026. Catalina Sugar Beach will be available to cruise passengers sailing with MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys, as well as guests staying at Casa de Campo Resort & Villas. For MSC Cruises, the new destination is part of a bigger change coming to its Caribbean schedule.
Beginning in November, MSC Cruises will operate weekly cruises from its new homeport in La Romana, Dominican Republic. MSC Opera will visit Catalina Sugar Beach on every itinerary, giving passengers the opportunity to spend a day enjoying the island's beaches and new amenities. The seven-night cruises will also offer the option of booking back-to-back sailings to create a 14-night "butterfly" cruise, giving passengers even more time to explore the Southern Caribbean. MSC says this will mark the first time the cruise line offers year-round sailings in the Southern Caribbean.
Catalina Island is known for its natural beauty, clear water and white-sand beaches. The new destination is being designed to preserve that natural character while adding amenities designed specifically for cruise guests. For passengers who simply want to relax, there will be plenty of opportunities to find a beach chair, enjoy the water and spend the day taking in the scenery. But guests looking for something more active will have plenty of options as well.
A large open-air beach pavilion will serve as the main dining area. The buffet will feature a combination of international dishes and local Dominican specialties. There will also be a shaded outdoor dining area where guests can sit down and enjoy their meal while taking in views of the surrounding water.
Catalina Sugar Beach will have two bars, including a tropical open-air palapa bar. The bar will provide refreshments while also serving as a shaded gathering area where guests can relax and enjoy the ocean views.
For those who have trouble sitting still on a beach, a water sports center will offer equipment for exploring the surrounding waters. Guests will be able to rent equipment and spend some time enjoying the clear Caribbean water.
If your idea of the perfect cruise port day involves doing absolutely nothing, MSC has you covered too. The beach will feature comfortable daybeds along with private cabanas available for rent. For cruisers who want a little more privacy and shade, the cabanas could be an appealing option for spending the day at the beach.
Catalina Sugar Beach won't just be about sitting on the beach. A scenic pathway will wind through the island's lush landscape toward a dramatic viewpoint. Along the way, educational signs will provide information about the island's different tree species and natural environment.
There will also be elevated clearings along the path where guests can stop and enjoy views of the beach and surrounding landscape. It's a nice addition for passengers who want to see a little more of Catalina Island instead of spending the entire port visit next to the water.
Guests who want to explore beyond Catalina Sugar Beach will have several excursion options. MSC says planned experiences will include a catamaran tour of the surrounding waters, snorkeling, and boat trips to Saona Island.
Other excursions will take guests to the nearby Cave of Wonders or Altos de Chavón, giving visitors an opportunity to see more of the Dominican Republic. That means passengers won't necessarily have to choose between a relaxing beach day and exploring the area. There should be options for both.
Private and cruise-line-developed beach destinations have become an increasingly popular part of the cruise industry. Cruise lines have been investing heavily in exclusive destinations where they can control the guest experience, provide food and beverages, offer activities and create another reason for passengers to choose their cruise line.
Catalina Sugar Beach appears to follow that same trend while taking advantage of Catalina Island's natural setting. And for MSC passengers, the location is particularly convenient because the destination will be incorporated directly into the cruise line's new La Romana itineraries.
Catalina Sugar Beach is scheduled to open in November 2026. MSC Opera will begin weekly sailings from La Romana at that time, with Catalina Sugar Beach included on every itinerary.
Explora Journeys will also visit the destination on select Caribbean journeys.
For cruisers looking for a Southern Caribbean itinerary that combines a cruise with plenty of beach time, this could become an interesting new option. As always with a brand-new cruise destination, we'll be interested to see how the finished product compares with the plans and descriptions released before opening day.
