Royal Caribbean is adding a fun new twist to its onboard experience as the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary. Across select sailings, the cruise line is organizing a special activity featuring patriotic-themed hidden ducks for guests to discover throughout the ship.
It’s a playful nod to one of cruising’s most popular traditions, hidden cruise ducks all while also honoring a major national milestone.
Cruise ducks are already a well-known part of modern cruise culture. Traditionally, guests bring small decorated rubber ducks onboard and hide them in public areas for others to find. It has become a lighthearted scavenger hunt that families and cruisers of all ages enjoy.
Now Royal Caribbean is taking that idea and making it an official onboard activity tied to America’s 250th anniversary celebration.
Instead of passenger-planted ducks, the cruise line itself is placing specially themed ducks around the ship for guests to discover during their voyage.
The ducks are designed with red, white, and blue themes to reflect American heritage and the upcoming semiquincentennial celebration in 2026.
While full details may vary by ship and sailing, the concept is simple: guests can find these hidden ducks in different areas of the vessel as part of a fun onboard activity connected to the national celebration.
It’s another example of how cruise lines are adding interactive experiences that go beyond entertainment shows and shore excursions.
Although Royal Caribbean has not released exact hiding locations, ducks are typically placed in public, high-traffic, and family-friendly areas such as:
Lounges and seating areas
Near shops or promenade-style spaces
Pool deck common areas
Atriums and open deck spaces
Guests should expect them to be visible enough to find, but tucked away just enough to feel like a small discovery.
Part of what makes this idea so popular is its simplicity. There’s no app, no schedule, and no competition, just the excitement of unexpectedly spotting something hidden in plain sight.
Families often enjoy it the most, with kids treating it like a scavenger hunt while adults appreciate the small surprise during their day onboard.
It also adds a sense of connection between guests celebrating the same sailing, especially on longer cruises where small onboard traditions tend to develop naturally.
What started years ago as an unofficial passenger game has now become part of mainstream cruise culture. By turning it into an organized activity, Royal Caribbean is acknowledging how much guests enjoy these small interactive traditions.
It also fits into a larger trend across the cruise industry: creating more casual, self-guided experiences that guests can enjoy at their own pace throughout the ship.
As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, cruise lines are finding creative ways to bring the celebration onboard and this duck-hunting activity is a simple but memorable example.
If you’re sailing on a Royal Caribbean ship during these special sailings, keep your eyes open. You never know where one of these patriotic ducks might be hiding.
And if you find one, let us know. Hopefully this it makes one of those small cruise memories you talk about long after the vacation ends.
